Today marks a pivotal moment for Mozambique. The Assembly of the Republic is debating a landmark bill—the Political Commitment for an Inclusive National Dialogue. As a Member of Parliament, I wholeheartedly endorse this move, convinced it will pave the way for lasting national unity and progress.
Why This Dialogue Matters: Learning from Our History
Mozambique has experienced significant challenges since independence. Despite the historic 1992 Rome Peace Accords and the establishment of multi-party democracy, we still face:
- Electoral irregularities and violence since 1994
- Rising cost of living and unemployment
- Insufficient housing, healthcare, and education services
- Persistent corruption undermining public trust
These unresolved issues underline the urgent need for an inclusive national dialogue. It is time we break this cycle of instability and mistrust.
An Opportunity for True Unity and Change
Signed on March 5, 2025, by nine key political parties—including Frelimo, Renamo, MDM, Podemos, Revolução Democrática, Humanitário de Moçambique, Renovação Social, Reconciliação Nacional, and Nova Democracia—this initiative is unprecedented in scope and ambition. It shows genuine political maturity and commitment to the Mozambican people.
The proposed Technical Commission, consisting of representatives from these parties and civil society, will guide reforms over two years, addressing critical areas such as:
- Constitutional and electoral system reforms
- Modernisation of public administration
- Defence and security sector improvement
- Equitable management of natural resources
- National reconciliation to heal divisions
How This Dialogue Will Improve Your Life
Supporting this dialogue means choosing a brighter future. Here’s how the dialogue will directly benefit you:
- Stronger democratic institutions: Ensuring elections reflect your voice fairly.
- Improved governance: Tackling corruption and boosting accountability.
- Social stability: Creating harmony among diverse groups.
- Economic prosperity: Attracting investment and creating better jobs.
- Better public services: Strengthening education, healthcare, and housing.
Navigating Challenges with Determination
Of course, this path will have hurdles. Balancing interests among diverse political parties and civil society demands patience and transparency. Effective implementation is crucial to maintain public confidence and ensure meaningful outcomes.
Yet, the inclusive nature of this initiative offers genuine hope. The presence of civil society voices will ground discussions in your real concerns and aspirations.
A Call for Collective Action
As your representative in parliament, I am dedicated to this national dialogue. I believe passionately that this is Mozambique’s chance to move beyond division towards true unity and prosperity.
I invite each of you to embrace this opportunity. Engage actively in the dialogue process. Let your voices be heard clearly, shaping a future we can all proudly share.
Together, let us commit to building a Mozambique founded on respect, democracy, and progress.
Now is our moment. Let us not waste it.
